Gudmundsson makes history with landmark goal

"The record has been discussed a lot but I never thought about it much," admitted Tryggvi Gudmundsson after becoming the all-time leading scorer in the history of the Icelandic top flight.

ÍBV Vestmannaeyjar forward Tryggvi Gudmundsson has become the all-time leading scorer in the history of the Icelandic top flight after overhauling Ingi Björn Albertsson's long-standing record.

Despite equalling the 126-goal feat last year, Gudmundsson failed to surpass his compatriot before the close of the season. Luck continued to conspire against the 38-year-old, after he suffered an embolism and subsequently missed the opening five games of 2012.

It was merely a case of delaying the inevitable, though, as Gudmundsson conjured a record 127th strike in a 4-1 defeat of Stjarnan on Monday. "I am very pleased with my career but I have plenty left to give and have no plans to quit just yet," said Gudmundsson. "To be honest, I feel just as good as when I started playing."

The diminutive forward began his exploits with ÍBV, and played abroad with Tromsö IL, Stabæk Fotball and Örgryte IS, before signing for FH Hafnarfjördur in 2005. He came full circle five years later as Gudmundsson etched his name into ÍBV folklore by eclipsing Albertsson's 25-year record. The Icelander has also won four championships, two cups and been capped 42 times by his country.
