What's on the Pay Check?

Negotiating on a salary is often the most uncomfortable and embarrassing thing in an interview or salary negotiation meeting. Though the very thought of discussion seems to be overwhelming, neither do we want to show ourselves as voracious nor act docile to even ask for what we are worth at. Especially in an interview wherein most of us do not want to start with a wrong foot with the prospective new employer or once confront accept whatever is challenged for.

These tips which have evolved in my mind after prolonged thought and preparation may serve useful to you at least the next time you happen to face such a situation.

Salary Topic Initiation

The salary topic is sure to arise at the conclusion of every interview. So it is better to let the employer initiate the topic on salary, so that we get to know their mind and budget. Based on the budget mentioned one can work up negotiating further.

Salary research

It is best to be well informed. A thorough research on the current salary standard prevailing in the market is a must. For this one needs to figure in one's qualification, skills and location as well. The figure you mention has to be substantial for your experience and expertise.

Be Precise

Be precise in your mention and not vague. This may show that you are well versed and pre-planned rather than be ambiguous. Also support your salary expectation with the skills and experience you would bring to the company if you are hired.

Never Compare

Peer pressure could often lead us to compare, but ultimately it could have leave a devastating effect on us and the interviewer. Each company has their own set of policies and procedures in hiring and salary calculation. A salary is formulated from such policies, so it is merely pointless to compare compensation of one company with that of others.

Be Flexible

Exhibit a range, rather than being explicit. This will demonstrate that you are amicable and willing to negotiate and will also thrive as a better team player in the company.

Fringe Benefits and Holidays

Lot of times company offering low salaries would end up offering other benefits such as flexible working hours, fringe-benefits, bonuses, and option to work from home. The opportunities in such company could be promising and also be welcoming. So if it appears to be prospective, no doubt one can make an instant choice.
